视力检查 Reading the Eye Chart
Guide any patient through the eye chart in Mandarin: one eye at a time, the tumbling E, pinhole, near card, color and the numbers.
By the end of this module you can…
- Tell the patient which eye to cover, and coach them line by line: no squinting, no peeking.
- Explain the tumbling E to patients who don’t read English letters: 上、下、左、右, from the patient’s side.
- Give the instructions for the pinhole, the near card and the color-vision book, and say what each one is for.
- Say vision the way patients from China know it (一点零, 零点五, 四点七), and write the US value.
- Ask about a drop in vision, get the doctor when it can’t wait, and leave what results mean to the doctor.

- 请用遮眼板挡住左眼，两只眼睛都睁开。Qǐng yòng zhē yǎn bǎn dǎng zhù zuǒ yǎn, liǎng zhī yǎn jing dōu zhēng kāi.Cover your left eye; keep both eyes open.
- 请从上往下读，读到最小能看清的那一行。Qǐng cóng shàng wǎng xià dú, dú dào zuì xiǎo néng kàn qīng de nà yì háng.Read down to the smallest line you can see.
- 别眯眼，正常看就行。Bié mī yǎn, zhèng cháng kàn jiù xíng.Don’t squint; just look normally.
- 不确定也可以猜一下。Bú què dìng yě kě yǐ cāi yí xià.If you’re not sure, it’s fine to guess.
- 好，现在换过来，挡住右眼。Hǎo, xiàn zài huàn guo lai, dǎng zhù yòu yǎn.Now switch: cover your right eye.
- 开口朝哪边，您就用手指哪边。Kāi kǒu cháo nǎ biān, nín jiù yòng shǒu zhǐ nǎ biān.Point the way the opening faces.
- 请透过这些小孔看。跟刚才比，清楚一点吗？Qǐng tòu guò zhè xiē xiǎo kǒng kàn. Gēn gāng cái bǐ, qīng chu yì diǎn ma?Look through the pinholes: any clearer?
- 现在看近的。请把这张卡拿在离眼睛这么远的地方。Xiàn zài kàn jìn de. Qǐng bǎ zhè zhāng kǎ ná zài lí yǎn jing zhè me yuǎn de dì fang.Now up close: hold the card about this far.
- 您右眼现在相当于零点五，也就是四点七。Nín yòu yǎn xiàn zài xiāng dāng yú líng diǎn wǔ, yě jiù shì sì diǎn qī.Right eye: about 0.5, or 4.7 (20/40).
- 是突然看不清的，还是慢慢变差的？Shì tū rán kàn bu qīng de, hái shi màn màn biàn chà de?Did it go suddenly, or gradually?
